It is important that you protect yourself against the flu and if you are an employer, equally important to protect your workplace against the spread of the flu. The influenza virus is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death.

For the first time, a 4-strain influenza vaccine has been approved by the FDA.  It will be available for the 2013-2014 flu season.  It is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and is for adults and children aged 3 years and older.  It will protect against 2 A strains and 2 B strains.  The currently administered vaccine (trivalent) protects against 2 A strains and 1 B strain.

To protect yourself and others, the CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the most important step in protecting against flu viruses. CDC suggests receiving the vaccine as soon as it becomes available. This is especially important for those in the workplace as it is an environment of having close contact with a number of people each day. Companies who encourage their employees to receive the vaccine each year will see reduced absenteeism, which will result in significantly reducing non-productivity due to illness. And companies who go a step further and offer the vaccine on-site during the work day,  experience a higher level of participation due to the convenience and at the same time, receive the benefit of eliminating lost work time for employees to commute to their personal physician’s office for the vaccine.  (Download free posters at http://www.cdc.gov/germstopper/materials.htm)
