Malaria

Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. If left untreated, complications may develop, resulting in death. About 1,500 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the U.S. annually, mostly in returned travelers.

Based on risk assessment, specific malaria prevention interventions should be used by the traveler. This includes protection against mosquito bites through the use of repellents, preferably containing DEET, or insecticide treated bed nets, and specific medicines to prevent malaria. Your travel health professional will know which medication is effective against the malaria that is present at your destination.   In some countries, drugs may be sold that are counterfeit or substandard.  These drugs may not be effective.  Antimalarial drugs should always be purchased in the U.S. before traveling.
