Rise in cholera activity

As reported by International SOS, more than 15,300 cases of cholera have been reported since the beginning of the year. More than 350 were fatal. The outbreak has reached most provinces, including Kinshasa (the capital).

The current outbreak began in mid-2011. In total, there have been at least 30,000 cases of infection with at least 700 deaths. The country's last experience with a major cholera outbreak was in 2008.

Cholera is an intestinal infection that is spread through food or water that has been contaminated by the feces of an infected person. The symptoms are usually mild. Severe cases of cholera can cause life threatening dehydration. Treatment involves fluid replacement and antibiotics.

There is not a vaccine available in the U.S. to protect against cholera.
