According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 5,600 people since the beginning of the year have been infected with meningitis. More than 590 have died.
It has been confirmed through laboratory testing that the outbreak is mainly due to meningococcal serogroup W135. The local government is continuing to conduct immunization campaigns and emergency control measures in collaboration with WHO and other health organizations.
Burkina Faso lies in the African Meningitis belt and typically experiences an annual epidemic of meningococcal meningitis December through June.

All travelers to Burkina Faso are recommended to be vaccinated against meningitis with the quadrivalent vaccine, serogroups A, C, Y and W135.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a meningitis outbreak across two districts in Burkina Faso. More than 3,600 people have been infected since the beginning of 2012. More than 370 of them have died. The worst affected regions are Sindaou and Solenzo. The outbreak is mainly due to meningococcal serogroup W135.
Immunization campaigns and emergency control measures are being conducted by the local government and WHO.

December through June.
